“You don’t write because you want to say something; you write because you have something to say,” wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald. When you decide to start a blog, it doesn’t mean you have to be one of the greatest writers of all time like Fitzgerald.

You’re likely someone with solid knowledge in a specific field—the one you’ve chosen as a platform to share your ideas. Each blog post gives you the opportunity to check one or several items off your to-do list.
Before you start writing a blog post, you need to build a strong foundation for your content. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been actively working on my own blog, and during this time I’ve identified a list of key tasks that I’d like to share with you.
Below, I’ll explain how to write and structure a blog post, and I’ll also provide a few examples for visual inspiration.

How to Write a Blog Post
Capture your readers’ attention by following these steps to create an outstanding blog post:
Define your audience
Choose a topic to write about
Conduct keyword research
Dive deeper into the topic
Create a killer headline
Build a clear and organized outline
Write engaging content
Add relevant images
Include a call to action
Optimize the article for SEO
Proofread the text
Promote your article
01. Define Your Audience
You’re not writing into a void—you’re trying to tell someone something that you know is important or useful to them. So who is that someone? What are they interested in?
Before you write your first word, you need to answer these questions. For example, if you run a business that sells cookies and cakes, you might target people looking for party ideas or inspiring recipes.
How would you figure that out?
Start by researching successful blogs in your industry to get a sense of the type of content they share. By studying your field, you’ll be able to identify who your audience is and what kind of content you should create for them.

02. Choose a Topic to Write About
There are many factors involved in choosing a topic for your article. Continuing with the baking business example, let’s say you decide to write about chocolate chip cookies. That’s a great start, but it’s not enough on its own. You also need to decide on a format, such as one of the following:
How-to blog post: How to Bake Chocolate Chip Cookies from Scratch
List post: The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipes
Tips and tricks: How to Make Extra Chewy Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies
Definition-based post: What Are No-Bake Chocolate Chip Cookies?
Trend article: The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipes of 2022
Company news: Introducing Our New Chocolate Chip Cookie Collection
If you scroll to the end of this article, you’ll find real examples of blog posts from my own blog created in several different formats. Use them as inspiration—they’ll give you a clear idea of how to structure your own articles.
03. Conduct Keyword Research
Once you’ve chosen the direction for your blog post, the next factor to consider is its potential to succeed in search engine results pages—in other words, how likely it is to attract attention to your content. This involves keyword research.
Keyword research is one of the most important components of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your blog post. It helps you determine which search terms you could potentially rank for in search engines like Google and Yandex.
Keywords are short phrases such as “chocolate chip cookie recipes” or “chocolate chip cookie ingredients.” The content of your article should be built around the keywords you want to compete for.
If you’re not sure which keywords to target, you can start with a free SEO tool like Yandex Wordstat.
04. Dive Deeper into the Topic
Take time to explore what content has already been written about your chosen keywords and how those articles perform in search results.
You can do this by reviewing the first few pages of search results to understand which subtopics and key points are commonly covered.
Combining external research with your own knowledge and observations will help you create the most comprehensive article possible. Search engines reward high-quality content, and readers will appreciate it too.
05. Create a Killer Headline
We’ve all heard the phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Unfortunately, most people still do—especially when it comes to headlines.
That’s why it’s important to capture your readers’ attention with a compelling title right from the start. A strong headline increases the chances that someone will click on your article and continue reading.
Your headline might be thought-provoking, emotional, surprising, or simply clear and useful.

06. Create an Organized Outline
Now it’s time to build the structure for your content. This helps you understand the flow of your article before you start filling it with details.
Start with subheadings. These are the components of your blog post that break the content into smaller, easier-to-read sections.
Keep them clear and informative. For example, if your article is a step-by-step guide, list the steps clearly:
Step 1: Gather the ingredients
Step 2: Mix and knead the dough
Even though this is only a draft outline, your subheadings are crucial to your article’s success.
From a reader’s perspective, subheadings are often the second most important element after the headline, since many readers scan them before reading the full text.
While outlining, you can also add bullet-point notes under each subheading. This helps you organize the ideas you want to cover in your article.
07. Write Engaging Content
Now it’s time to start writing. Your article will need both an introduction and a main body.
Start with the introduction. In the first few sentences, you should already capture your readers’ attention. You might begin with a relevant quote, a statistic, a short story, or an interesting fact.
Next, set the tone by briefly explaining what the article will cover. This gives readers a reason to keep reading.
Then move on to the main content, which appears under each subheading. This is where you share your expertise and insights gathered during your research. Keep the writing clear, engaging, and concise, avoiding unnecessary details.
A conclusion isn’t always required, but it can be helpful—especially for storytelling articles or longer posts. You might summarize your key ideas in a short bullet list or share a few final thoughts in a closing paragraph.
Whatever you choose, make sure your article ends on a strong and memorable note.
08. Add Relevant Images
Along with well-written content, enhance your blog post with high-quality images that illustrate your text.
Choose one image as the featured image—this will be the first visual readers see when they open your article or view it on your blog’s homepage.
Your images should add value, not simply fill space. It’s also best to avoid overused stock photos.
With Wix, you can add a professional photo gallery to individual posts to showcase a collection of images. You can also browse media from more than 20 categories through the built-in libraries of Shutterstock and Unsplash, and insert them directly into your blog post from your website dashboard.

09. Add a Call to Action
Include at least one clear intention for how you want to convert your reader into a potential customer. This is called a call to action (CTA). It’s usually a link placed within your blog post that encourages readers to take a specific step, such as:
Subscribe to our newsletter
Shop in our store
Create the website of your dreams
A well-placed call to action helps guide readers toward the next step after they finish reading your article.

10. Optimize Your Post for SEO
A strong Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy goes beyond the keyword research mentioned in step three. To help your blog post and website rank higher in search engine results, you’ll need to take additional steps.
Start by distributing your chosen keywords throughout your content. For example, if your target keyword is “chocolate chip cookie recipes,” include that exact phrase in:
The post title
The SEO title
The URL (for example: chocolate-chip-cookie-recipes/)
The post description
You can also include the keyword in the alt text of your images. In addition, consider exploring other SEO techniques that can help improve your rankings.
11. Review Your Content
You’ve worked hard to create an engaging blog post. The last thing you want is for readers to associate your content with grammar mistakes or unprofessional writing.
Avoid this by carefully reviewing your text from beginning to end. It’s also a good idea to ask a friend or colleague to proofread the article as well.
Remove any repetitive content or unnecessary filler, and focus on quality rather than quantity. Once you’re satisfied with your work, it’s time to click the big and slightly intimidating “Publish” button.
12. Promote Your Post
Publishing your blog post doesn’t mean readers will automatically find it. The next step is to think about the best ways to promote it—such as email marketing and sharing it on social media.
Email marketing is one of the most common—and often underrated—promotion strategies. You can easily create and send personalized emails to your audience. With this approach, you can choose ready-made templates or design your own emails from scratch, integrate your contact list, and track performance statistics.
In addition to email, it’s important to notify your audience through social media. In today’s digital landscape, no marketing strategy is complete without it. You can share your article as a post or promote it through short stories and updates.
